Caithness stone helps secure gold in Facebook’s Chelsea Flower Show garden

Last week saw the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where Caithness’ distinctive flagstone featured in Facebook’s sponsored garden which won three awards at the show.

The ‘Beyond the Screen’ garden was designed by award winning landscaper Joe Perkins to celebrate the positive impact of social media and how it connects people around the world. In collaboration with The Outdoor Room who were in charge of constructing the design, the garden won not only a gold meal but also the best garden and best construction in the ‘Space to Grow’ category.

The design was inspired by the coast with water features representing what connects people to one another and plants from all over the world used throughout the garden to emphasise global connections..  A dominating feature of the garden was the use of Caithness flagstone throughout the space which was originally inspired by rock Joe had seen on his family holidays to the coast of Spain. During visits to Lieurary quarry, Joe alongside CED Stone Group’s MD, Giles Heap, met with the Norse Stone team and picked out specific stone to be used in the final garden design.

The finished garden featured a path made of huge slabs of Caithness stone leading to a decking surrounded with plants and an impressive copper canopy structure. Other pieces of stone were staggered vertically creating large rock outcrops similar to those Joe was inspired by in Spain with a water feature which simulated the movement of the ocean waves breaking against the stone face. Further sections of stone were then used throughout the other water features, planting areas and around the decking.

Managing Director Michael Ronaldson, said: What a fantastic result for Facebook, Joe Perkins, The Outdoor Room and all involved. It is a privilege to have played a part in such a prestigious project and to have met Joe when he came to the quarry to select our Caithness flagstone. He knew exactly what he wanted and it paid off.

During the five day event, 157,00 people attended the Chelsea Flower Show. Now that it is over, the ‘Beyond the Screen’ garden is due to be dismantled and reused in community projects along the HS2 rail route.
